A thangka begins with the ground: cotton stretched, sized with animal glue and chalk, then burnished until it is smooth enough to take a line a fraction of a millimetre wide. The drawing follows fixed proportional grids — the iconography is not improvised.
Pigments are ground mineral — malachite, azurite, cinnabar, orpiment — bound in glue and applied flat, then shaded. The gold detailing goes on last and is burnished with an agate.
This is contemporary work, not an antique, and it carries a declaration to that effect for customs. Mounted in silk brocade with a dust cover and hanging rod.
