Lost-wax casting is destructive at both ends. The model is wax and burns away; the mould is clay and has to be broken to release the bronze. Whatever comes out is the only one there will be.
After the pour the piece is chased — the detail in the jewellery, the folds, the lotus base is cut in by hand with punches, which is where most of the labour actually sits. The face is then cold-gilded and the hair painted, following the convention for this figure.
We describe it as a piece of metalwork made now, by living craftspeople, because it is. It carries a non-antique declaration for customs.
