Two ends, two jobs. Suede for striking — it gives you the fundamental cleanly without the metallic rap. Bare wood for rimming, because suede grips too much and stalls.
The ring cushion keeps the bowl off the table so the base can move. A bowl sitting flat on hard wood is a bowl with half its sustain.
Sold on its own because strikers get lost and cushions get borrowed.
