About this product

Ankhijhyal means, roughly, "eye window" — a lattice dense enough that you can see out and nobody can see in. They are the defining feature of a Newari street front and they are cut entirely by hand, with short chisels, from solid sal.

Sal is dense, heavy and stable, which is why these things survive earthquakes and centuries. It is also unforgiving to carve, which is why a panel of this size is weeks of work.

We sell it as a wall piece rather than as joinery. It ships crated with an ISPM 15 heat-treatment stamp.

How it was made

Hand-carved, chisel-cut lattice — Bhaktapur.

Sourced from Bhaktapur carving workshop.

Wood Carving & Furniture — Bhaktapur. See the rest of this category.

Producer descriptions on this site are sourcing categories rather than named suppliers. Named-supplier disclosure is available to trade buyers under NDA — ask when you request a quote.

Care & keeping

Dust with a brush, not a cloth — cloth catches on the lattice. Oil once a year with boiled linseed if the room is dry.

Shipping, duty & returns

Retail orders leave Kathmandu within two working days of payment clearing and are tracked throughout. Free over $150.00; a flat $24.00 below that.

Import duty and tax in your own country are not included and are payable by you. We declare goods at their real value.

Thirty days to return anything unused and in its original packaging. Food, tea, spices, honey and cosmetics are not returnable once opened, which is a food-safety position rather than a commercial one.
