Wrapping paper made from bark rather than pulp does not tear along a crease, which changes what you can do with it. It also takes a hand-block print without the ink sinking and going muddy.
Patterns are cut into wooden blocks and stamped by hand, one colour at a time. Slight offsets between colours are how you know it was not printed on a roll.
