Hemp canvas is heavier and more abrasion-resistant than cotton of the same weave, and it does not rot when it gets wet and stays wet — which is why it was sailcloth for several centuries.
Handles are leather-reinforced at the stress points and stitched through, not riveted. The zip is a brass No. 8, which can be replaced by any cobbler.
Unlined on purpose. A lining hides wear and makes a repair twice the job.
