About this product

Allo is the least mechanised textile we carry. The nettle is cut in the eastern hills, the bark stripped, boiled in wood ash to break down the gum, beaten, and then spun by hand on a drop spindle — a process nobody has managed to industrialise.

Woven on a backstrap loom, which means the width is limited by the weaver's arm span and the tension is held by their body. The selvedge is not perfectly straight and could not be.

Undyed, so the colour is the fibre's own pale grey-fawn. It starts stiff, like new linen, and softens with every wash until it drapes.

How it was made

Hand-spun, backstrap-loom woven — Sankhuwasabha, Koshi Province.

Sourced from Eastern hills weaving groups.

Hemp & Allo Textiles — Sankhuwasabha. See the rest of this category.

Producer descriptions on this site are sourcing categories rather than named suppliers. Named-supplier disclosure is available to trade buyers under NDA — ask when you request a quote.

Care & keeping

Hand-wash cool. It softens with use; do not try to shortcut that with fabric conditioner, which coats the fibre.

Shipping, duty & returns

Retail orders leave Kathmandu within two working days of payment clearing and are tracked throughout. Free over $150.00; a flat $24.00 below that.

Import duty and tax in your own country are not included and are payable by you. We declare goods at their real value.

Thirty days to return anything unused and in its original packaging. Food, tea, spices, honey and cosmetics are not returnable once opened, which is a food-safety position rather than a commercial one.
